How Does VMT Control Deformation When Machining Soft PTFE?

PTFE is soft, so clamping and cutting forces can press a part out of shape, and the material can spring back after release. A part that measures correctly while clamped may no longer match the drawing once it is released.

How Does VMT Manage Dimensional Change in PTFE Parts?

A PTFE part that reads in tolerance while warm can measure differently once it cools, because PTFE reacts strongly to temperature and the stock can hold stress. We deal with both at three points in the job.

While cutting: sharp tools, light cuts and coolant or air limit the heat that goes into the part.
Between operations: roughing and finishing are separate steps, which helps limit the effect of material stress on the final dimensions.
At inspection: parts are measured at a stable room temperature, not while still warm from cutting, so readings are consistent and easier to compare with your incoming inspection.

How Does VMT Handle Burrs and Edge Quality on PTFE Parts?

PTFE tends to tear rather than cut cleanly, so burrs and fuzzy edges can appear on bores, grooves and outer edges. On parts that seal or mate with other components, those edges mean extra cleanup on your line or a poor fit.

We start at the cutting stage, with sharp tools and a light finishing pass that leaves a cleaner edge to begin with. Critical edges are then checked, and fine burrs that are hard to see with the naked eye are removed by deburring under a microscope, which helps parts arrive ready to assemble.

Bronze-Filled PTFE

Graphite-Filled PTFE

How Does VMT Finish and Clean PTFE Parts After Machining?

PTFE is not anodized, plated or painted the way metals are, so the surface on your part is the surface that comes off the tool. We use sharp tools, light finishing passes and controlled feeds to leave a smooth, consistent surface without smeared or pulled material, which helps on sealing faces, sliding surfaces and mating bores. PTFE also attracts dust and holds on to cutting residue, so finished parts are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath. This helps remove fine chips and residue from bores, grooves and blind holes that wiping does not reach. Parts are then packed to stay clean in transit, which suits assemblies for medical, semiconductor and fluid handling equipment.

How Does VMT Inspect PTFE Parts Before Shipping?

Soft PTFE needs inspection methods that do not change the size of the part being measured. Before parts leave our factory, these are the checks we run.

Measuring Without Deforming the Part

PTFE is soft enough to be pressed out of shape by a hard contact gauge. We use light probe force or non-contact optical measurement on soft features, which helps keep the reading closer to the true part size.

Threads and Bores

Threads and bores are checked with go and no go gauges and pin gauges chosen to avoid scratching or pulling the surface. Critical bores are measured on a CMM where the drawing calls for it.

Surface and Edge Check

Each part is inspected for scratches, pulled material and remaining burrs before it is cleaned and packed. This helps catch cosmetic and edge issues that dimensional checks alone do not show.

Inspection Reports

What is PTFE?

Does PTFE creep, and how does it affect part design?

Yes. Under constant load, especially at higher temperatures, PTFE slowly deforms over time, which is known as creep or cold flow. It matters most for parts that are clamped, preloaded or carry a sustained load, such as seals and gaskets. A few design choices can help:

Filled grade: Glass, carbon or bronze filled grades resist deformation better than virgin PTFE.
Larger bearing area: Spreading the clamping load over a bigger area lowers the stress on the material.
Support and retention: A groove, a metal backing or a retaining feature can help hold the part in position.
Expansion clearance: PTFE expands more than metals as temperature rises, so leave clearance in mating features.

How do I choose the right PTFE grade?

Start with the main requirement of the part, then check what the filler gives up.

Purity and chemical resistance come first: Choose Virgin PTFE. It suits food contact, medical, semiconductor and strong chemical use.
Cost matters more than purity: Choose Mechanical Grade PTFE for general industrial parts where extreme purity is not required.
The part carries a sustained load: Choose Glass-Filled PTFE for seals and bearings, or Bronze-Filled PTFE where compressive strength matters most.
Wear and heat are both present: Choose Carbon-Filled PTFE for parts like pump parts and valve seats.
Friction is the priority, or the part runs dry or in abrasive conditions: Choose Graphite-Filled PTFE.

Fillers improve strength and wear, but they can reduce chemical resistance and purity, and carbon, graphite and bronze make the material conductive. Check this against the media and any insulation requirement before you decide.
